My definition about Occupational therapy is becoming better & better through constantly understanding the way we serve our clients.  Evolving understanding of child’s behaviour through sensory, motor & relationship lens it’s helping me to broaden my scope to help clients become his best selves within their capabilities.

OT is beyond just developing fine motor, or upper extremity or mere tabletop activities. It is a holistic approach that take s into account micro analysis of every bodily system that contributes for function to engage the child with self & world around him. Make him more efficient in the environment he lives in.

Beginning in the 1960’s, Dr. Ayres(OT)  systematically investigated the nature of the way the brain processes sensory information so that it can be used for learning, emotions and behaviour, creating sensory integration theory as it is currently used in occupational therapist practice and applied in paediatrics and childhood education.

Observing child through a sensory frame of reference taught me how not to reach to a conclusion & not to be judgemental about a child’s behaviour but give it pause to wonder & understand the child’s body language ,his postural control during the task & connect it with sensory pieces thus moving towards holism in assessment.
